A closed lost field tells you that a deal ended. It rarely tells you why. The reason usually surfaced weeks earlier, in a sentence a buyer said once and nobody wrote down.
Sales teams write notes for their own recall, not for analysis. That is reasonable. It also means the pipeline holds outcomes rather than causes, and the causes are what you would need to change anything.
Objections, competitor mentions, budget hesitancy and timing constraints all appear in conversation long before they appear in a stage change. When every call is analysed consistently, those moments become countable rather than anecdotal.
The deal did not fail at the close. It failed at a question nobody followed up on.
The shift is from recording what happened to understanding what drove it.
